Environmental Sustainability

UB's Sustainability Programme includes a range of clear and measurable targets to help improve our environmental footprint as well as other initiatives to help our supply chain.  We publish a report on our performance annually and as you will see from the 2012 report and the highlights listed below, we have made substantial progress against all of our goals:

  • 34% reduction in carbon emissions since 1995, 36% excluding our KP Snacks business, now sold.  Original 35% target achieved and new goal set of 40% by 2020
  • Zero waste to landfill target achieved
  • 52% reduction in water use since 2007
  • We have reduced the carbon impact of our packaging by 17% since 2003
  • We have taken over 20 million lorry miles off the roads since 2005 and reduced our transport emissions by 40% , new 50% target set
  • We are using 100% sustainable palm oil
  • We now have over 95% of our raw material and ingredient suppliers on the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange (SEDEX) system

McVitie's has recently teamed up with recycling experts TerraCycle to launch the McVitie's Biscuit Wrapper Brigade. Biscuit wrappers are recyclable, but very little mixed plastic recycling is carried out by local council kerb side collections, resulting in millions of biscuit wrappers being sent to landfill. McVitie's and TerraCycle's initiative -  a first for the industry - encourages consumers to help end this enormous waste of resources by sending in their used biscuit wrappers to be recycled. McVitie's Digestives are also proud supporters of the The Prince's Countryside Fund: a charity which aims to improve the sustainability of British farming and rural communities.  It targets areas of greatest need to reconnect consumers with countryside issues and support farming and rural crisis charities through a dedicated emergency funding stream.
