United Biscuits supports apprentices in industry recognised qualification
2 June 2015: United Biscuits (UB), the leading manufacturer of biscuits and cakes and the College of North West London (CNWL) celebrated the graduation of its apprenticeships at the McVitie’s factory in Harlesden.
The inaugural programme saw 39 UB employees studying Maintenance Engineering Technology at the CNWL over an 18 month period. The graduates achieved an industry-recognised qualification securing UB employees in the top league across the food industry.
To achieve this qualification the employees were required to complete coursework which was both practical and theory based, fitting shift patterns at the Harlesden factory around studying at the College.
Helen Day, Factory General Manager at Harlesden hosted the event presenting certificates at the awards ceremony for the apprentices. Helen commented: “This programme supports our Site strategy of investment in training and development to secure our future growth.”
Ray Shilling, College of North West London’s Assistant Principal – Enterprise & Employment, commented: “It’s fantastic that a company as prestigious and large-scale as United Biscuits is investing in skills for adult apprentices. The College is absolutely delighted to be involved.”
David Grant, an apprentice commented: “The programme has been incredibly challenging and demanding but it has given me an in-depth knowledge of factory engineering work and I am so glad that I persevered through it all. I am ecstatic to have finished and have this qualification.”
Following the success, the next cohort of 40 apprentices will commence later this month securing more talent into the business.
