United Biscuits wins environmental initiative of the year award
United Biscuits has won the coveted title Environmental Initiative of the Year in the Food Manufacture’s Food Manufacturing Excellence Awards (FMEAs).
The entry detailed UB’s broad based environmental programme and results up to the end of last year, which included reductions in water, energy use and transport emissions, as well as achieving zero waste to landfill. The judges were also impressed that, when UB launched the programme, an employee suggestion scheme was put in place which generated over 200 ideas (of which over half have been implemented).
The award judges – led by judging panel chairman Paul Wilkinson – praised United Biscuits’ commitment to green issues and managed employee ownership of its environmental programme.
The judges said: “From a 35% cut in carbon emissions to zero waste to landfill, from 20M fewer road miles to 100% sustainable palm oil use, the results have been just massive.”
Rick Pendrous, editor of Food Manufacture, said: “The FMEAs go from strength-to-strength each year in recognising top achievement in the field of food and drink manufacturing. United Biscuits shone through in what was probably the most hotly contested category of the awards.”
Also shortlisted in this category were: Bernard Matthews, Coca-Cola Enterprise and the Iglo Foods Group.
