A roaring success: The Lion King voted UK’s favourite animal film as McVitie’s celebrates animal stars of the big screen
26 February 2016: United Biscuits (UB), a leading international manufacturer of biscuits, snacks and cakes, has today announced that McVitie’s has revealed The Lion King has been crowned the best animal movie of all time by Brits – beating classics, family favourites and tearjerkers such as Dumbo, Finding Nemo, and Marley and Me to the top spot.
Famous for using adorable animal characters its own McVitie’s sweeet™ ads, the British biscuit maker has polled the UK to find the nation’s favourite animal stars of the big screen ahead of this year’s Oscars. McVitie’s has surveyed biscuit lovers from across the country to find out which animal films and actors they think deserve to take home their very own statuettes.
The survey also saw Nemo from Finding Nemo take the ‘Best Actor’ gong, beating Bambi and Black Beauty to the top spot. Best actress went to classic canine heroine Lassie, who saw off Disney favourites Lady (Lady and the Tramp) and Finding Nemo’s Dory to win the top title.
McVitie’s has also created a brand new category for the occasion – Best Picture as voted for by pets of the UK – after the study revealed hilarious insight in to the way in which people’s pets interact with Hollywood’s finest animals. According to pet owners surveyed, the film that their pets have most enjoyed watching is the Disney classic, 101 Dalmatians, which stole the top spot from classics Beethoven and Babe in the category.
Those surveyed also revealed the ways their animals show their appreciation for their favourite flicks – with one fifth (21%) going right up to the screen to watch what’s going on, while just over one in ten (13%) had barked or meowed at the screen. Our pets also seem to enjoy interacting with their favourite films, with one in ten (10%) pawing at the screen, trying to chase animals on screen (8%) or even running around the back of the television set to look for the characters (8%)!
And the winners are:
Best Picture – The Lion King
Best Actress – Lassie
Best Actor – Nemo (Finding Nemo)
Best Supporting Actress – Miss Piggy (The Muppets)
Best Supporting Actor – Baloo (The Jungle Book)
Best Original Song – Bare Necessities (The Jungle Book)
Sarah Heynen, Marketing Director, Sweet Biscuits, said: “At McVitie’s we’re famous for using cute animal actors in our adverts to help evoke that sweeet™ feeling you get when you enjoy one of our biscuits. We therefore saw this as an opportunity to champion the other sweeet™ animal stars on our screens in the run up to the Oscars, and celebrate their contribution to our favourite films.
“It’s interesting to see how some newer releases and characters have captured the nation’s heart – but it’s also great to see some of the best-loved classics still standing the test of time.”

The Lion King
The Jungle Book
Marley and Me
