United Biscuits well on the way to meeting community targets

 

At the beginning of 2009 United Biscuits (UB) published a range of ambitious goals detailing plans for greater development of employees, further involvement in the wider community and improvements to the health and wellbeing of its workforce.
 
We have now published a further report detailing the exceptional progress made in the first year. The range of achievements are partly listed below and more detail can be found in the full update which can be downloaded at www.unitedbiscuits.com/community.php.
 
The report explains how UB is well on the way to achieving targets in the areas of graduate recruitment; apprenticeships; establishing Employee Learning Centres; developing the workforce through NVQs; increasing Food Science research opportunities for under- and post-graduates; establishing relationships with universities; and reducing Lost Time Accidents at factories. It also highlights achievements in charity projects and fundraising.
 
Some of last year’s achievements included:

- With our employees we have donated over £140,000 to charity in funds or product.

- We’ve granted 348 days leave for our employees to do volunteer work in their communities.

- NVQ learning more than doubled compared to 2008, with 714 employees (around 10% of our workforce) taking NVQs.

- We extended our apprentice scheme from 35 to 48 apprentices in 2009.

- We launched a Graduate Recruitment Programme and 19 new graduates joined UB.

- We managed in conjunction with our unions to increase the number of our sites with Employee Learning Centres from three to nine, with a further two due to open in 2010.

- Against a target to offer 150 graduate summer places a year, we had 173 places taken by students in 2009.

- UB’s accident frequency rate reduced by 25%, minor accidents were down 15%, and lost hours from Lost Time Accidents reduced by 42%.
