Communicating nutrition
Consumers use nutrition labelling on pack as an important source of information. UB is pleased to provide useful information to help consumers make informed choices.
UB is ahead of the UK industry norm for many of its products, going over and above the recommended guidelines. In 1992 it was the first biscuit manufacturer to, wherever possible, supply information on the Big 8 format of nutrients on its branded consumer products. If space is limited because of pack size, at least provide information on the Big 4 format of nutrients. The Big 8 are energy, protein, carbohydrate, fat, sugar, saturated fat, fibre and sodium and the Big 4 are energy, protein, carbohydrate and fat.
The information on pack includes a full ingredients list and nutrition information. It displays guideline daily amounts (GDAs) of calories, fat and sodium to show people how the snack fits into their daily nutrition intake.
From April 2006, UB started adding even more useful information to the nutrition table e.g. expanding the GDA information for other nutrition parameters such as carbohydrate, protein and fibre.
In addition, in Europe UB will publish the values of five key nutrients per serving on the front of pack of branded products, along with the percentage the serving represents as a proportion of the guideline daily amount.
UB provides further nutrition information through its website (www.biscuits.com) or carelines, in response to specific requests. In addition, in January 2005 UB launched a website with information about healthy lifestyles - www.123healthybalance.com The ‘1,2,3 for a healthy balance’ design on packaging since 2005 puts snacking into context and reinforces the principle that snacks can be eaten as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
