Carr’s is back – triumphant return of nation’s much loved water biscuit
Carr’s Table Water Biscuits return to shelves as Carlisle Factory re-opens following December floods
12 April 2016: United Biscuits (UB), a leading international manufacturer of biscuits, cakes and snacks, has announced that Carr’s Table Water Biscuits will be back on shelves this month. The ovens have fired up, the production lines are whirring and employees have rolled up their sleeves as the United Biscuits factory in Carlisle – producer of one of the nation’s favourite biscuits, the Carr’s Water Biscuit – returns to full production this month.
The Carlisle factory was forced to close due to substantial flooding and damage caused by Storm Desmond in December last year. However, the natural disaster did not dampen spirits, instead spurring employees to get the factory back up and running to have this much-loved product back on shelves across the nation.
The Carlisle factory is the only place in the world that makes the Carr’s Table Water Biscuit, with local spring water and the traditional brick oven being key ingredients in baking the unique taste of Carr’s that consumers know and love.
UB Manufacturing Director, Mark Taylor, said: “We take great pride in our biscuits and in being able to give people their favourite snacks. Our recipes and production methods are steeped in history as old as the Carr’s brand itself, so there was no question of moving to a temporary production site during closure. The support we have had from the local and wider community has been phenomenal, and it’s certainly shown what a big family we have here.”
Not only does the Carlisle Factory supply biscuit-lovers around the world with Carr’s, and some of United Biscuits famous biscuits from Jacob’s and McVitie’s, but it is also a major employer in the Cumbria region. Approximately 640 local employees work throughout the factory across each stage of production from recipe development through to baking, quality testing naturally, packaging and then loading for delivery to ensure that only the best biscuits get out the door.
UB Savoury Biscuits Marketing Director, Ted Linehan, said: “It’s fantastic to see the Carlisle Factory going at full-steam again. The team on the ground have done a remarkable job in getting us back on track so that we can get this product back on shelves in record time. We make over 80,000 tonnes of biscuits a year and these reach all corners of the globe, so it was very important to us that we get our supply going quickly but without compromising on the flavour and quality that we know our customers expect.”
“The support we have received from retailers and customers alike during this time has been incredible and we are grateful for this – it seems absence really does make the heart grow fonder. It’s good to be back.”
The Carr’s product line is the last one to re-start at the Carlisle Factory, and all United Biscuits products will now start to re-appear on UK consumers’ supermarket shelves for the nation to enjoy.
