McVitie's - The sign of a better biscuit



McVitie’s biscuits have been enjoyed by generations for over 100 years.

The first ever digestive biscuit was created by a new young employee, Alexander Grant. The name Digestive was derived from its high content of baking soda as an aid to food digestion. Over one hundred years later the McVitie’s Digestive remains a firm favourite and is the highest selling brand in the everyday biscuit segment.

McVitie’s first foray into the blending of biscuit and chocolate resulted in the Homewheat Chocolate Digestive brand (now simply known as McVitie’s Chocolate Digestive) in1925. Over 71 million packets of McVitie’s Chocolate Digestives are eaten in the UK each year – that’s an astounding 52 biscuits per second.

The HobNobs brand was launched in 1985 and a milk chocolate variant followed in 1987. The chocolate HobNob range was extended in 2006 to include new McVitie’s Milk Chocolate & Orange HobNobs and most recently HobNobs Creams.

1999 saw the introduction of the innovative tubes packaging for Chocolate Digestives, and the new packaging format was extended to Chocolate HobNobs the following year.

1999 was also the year when the Digestive family was further extended with the launch of Milk Chocolate Caramel Digestives. This brand is still unique within the everyday treat biscuit category and was the winner of the McVitie’s Dunk For Britain campaign in 2004 beating all other McVitie’s biscuits to win the title ‘Nation’s favourite McVitie’s dunking biscuit’.

In 2004, McVities reduced levels of sodium by an average of 10% and further sodium reductions were made in 2006 on McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestives, Digestives, Rich Tea and HobNobs.

In 2005 the new range of McVitie’s Cookies were launched with chocolate chip ‘n’ chunk, hazelnut choc chip & chunk and white choc chip & chunk variants. 2005 also saw the launch of McVitie’s Milk Chocolate & Orange Digestive, McVitie’s Milk Chocolate Mint Digestive and seasonal limited edition McVitie’s White Chocolate Digestive.

2006 was a busy year for McVitie’s with the addition of Moments, the mouth watering range of biscuits – perfect for when you want a relaxing moment to yourself.

More recent product launches include McVitie’s Fruitsters – 40% wholegrain biscuits available in four wholesome fruit combinations and McVitie's Yogfruits - delicious digestive biscuits covered in various fruity low fat yoghurt toppings.

In February 2008, McVitie's are launching their first ever range of organic biscuits. The Yumbles Organic range are made from the highest quality organic ingrediants and will be available in four delicious flavours: Sultana & Hazlenut Crumblies, Choc Chip Crumblies, Oat Nibbles and Wheat Nibbles.

The McVitie’s brand portfolio also includes, Minis, Classic Rich Tea, Fruit Shortcake, Ginger Nuts, Caramels, Boasters and the Lights range which includes Digestives, Rich Tea, HobNobs and Milk Chocolate Digestives – all 25% lower in fat than the standard variants.

Both traditional favourites like Rich Tea & Digestives, and new ranges such as Moments and Yogfruits, will continue to ensure generations enjoy the great taste of McVitie’s Biscuits!
